Welcoming a newborn into your home is a momentous occasion, and capturing these early days through an in-home photography session can create lasting memories. As an Oklahoma City-based newborn photographer, I’ve curated some important tips to help you prepare your home for a successful session.

1. Schedule During Optimal Timing
Newborns are best photographed within the first the first month of life when they are sleepier and more adaptable to poses. If you haven’t scheduled your session yet, it’s important to do so as early as possible to capture these fleeting moments. With that being said, if your baby is over 3 weeks, we can still do the session they just may be more annoed with us moving them!

2. Declutter Main Shooting Area
Focus on tidying up spaces where the session will take place, such as the living room, nursery, and/or master bedroom. Removing unnecessary items/cords and clutter ensures that the attention remains on your newborn and family, resulting in actimeless clean look.

3. Maximize Natural Light
Natural light enhances the quality of photographs. Open curtains and blinds to allow ample sunlight into the rooms. Sessions are typically scheduled during late morning or early afternoon when light is optimal.

4. Maintain a Comfortable Temperature
Newborns are sensitive to temperature changes. Ensure your home is warm to keep your baby comfortable, especially if they will be photographed without clothes. A space heater can also be helpful.

5. Choose Coordinated Outfits
Select soft, neutral-colored clothing for your family to keep the focus on your newborn. Avoid bold patterns that might distract from the main subjects. Comfortable attire helps everyone relax during the session.
6. Incorporate Personal Items

Including sentimental items like blankets, toys, or family heirlooms adds a personal touch to your photos. These elements make your images unique and meaningful. It's also a fun way to add sentimental pieces.

7. Embrace Candid Moments
Lifestyle photography focuses on genuine interactions. Don’t worry about posing perfectly; natural moments like cuddling, feeding, or soothing your baby often result in the most cherished photographs. Siblings fawning over the new baby and jumping on the bed are also great examples of candid moments!

By following these guidelines, you can create a relaxed environment that allows your family’s unique story to shine through in your newborn photographs.
